“Learners need endless feedback more than they need endless teaching.” –Grant Wiggins
Formative AssessmentFormative assessments are the assessments that you should be working with everyday. They are ongoing evaluations that can be informal or formal, given at any stage of the learning process to monitor students' learning. This constant feedback allows a teacher to differentiate instruction and improve student achievement. It helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. Formative assessments are low stake assessments, which means they have low or no point value.

Formal Formative |
There can be formal formative assessments that provide actual evidence about a student’s learning such as a worksheets, journals, exit slips, quiz, and graphic organizers. It’s important, as a teacher, to analyze the information collected from students and plan an action to help the students achieve learning goals.
Formal Formative Standard- CC.2.2.K.A.1: Extend concepts of putting together and taking apart to add and subtract within 10. Measurable Objectives- The Kindergarten students will be able to individually add two numbers together with the help of counting cubes to create 9 by filling out the 8 questions on the worksheet with 100% accuracy. Directions for completing the assignment- The students will be given a word problem and will use the counting cubes to visually demonstrate the word problem. After completing the problem, a student will be chosen to come up to the board to match the two numbers that add up to 9. The teacher will be able to assess their knowledge by assessing their worksheet that they fill out. They will also assess by constantly observing while doing the board activity. Accommodations/Modifications- If a student is struggling with the addition concept, give the student the option of using their manipulative cubes while filling out their worksheets. This will provide a good visual for the student. The teacher will also be in close proximity of the struggling student to offer additional help. Formal Formative
Standard- 2.1.1.A: Demonstrate the relationship between numbers and quantities, including place value, one-to-one correspondence, rote counting, counting by twos to 20, counting by tens and fives and comparing values of whole numbers up to 100. Measurable Objectives- By filling out a worksheet from their Student Activity Books, the students will be able to add ten to decade numbers to figure out the total, 15 out of 15 times. Assessment/Evaluation- They will fill out a worksheet for a formal assessment that deals with adding ten to decade numbers. The teacher will be able to see who is on track with the learning and also who needs additional instruction in this concept. Accommodations/Modifications- Some children may have difficulty drawing a circle in each box of the 10 x 10 grid in a timely way. Pair these children with a helper who can perform this task. |
Informal Formative |
Informal formative assessments could be something along the lines of observations, questioning, or class discussions. The teacher collects information from students in the form of a verbal response. The teacher would then act on the fly by recognizing students’ responses and adjusting the lesson to accommodate to the students’ understanding.
Informal Formative Standard- CC.2.1.K.A.2: Apply one-to-one correspondence to count the number of objects. Measurable Objectives- The Kindergarten students will use one-to-one correspondence by using the counting cubes and their addition baggy to add numbers up to 9, 9 out of 10 times. Directions for completing the assignment- The students will be given a number problem such as 5+__=9. They will use their counting cubes to count and their baggies to slide up the number scale to 9. They will hold up their baggies when finished for the teacher to check the answers. This assessment will be based off of informal evaluations through observations. The teacher will record whether each student has mastered this concept or not on her assessment chart as she walks around. Informal Formative
Standard-CC.2.2.1.A.2: Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Measurable Objective: By using their individual whiteboards and markers at their desk, the students will be able to identify and solve the missing partner or total given 4 word problems with 100% accuracy. Assessment/Evaluation: The teacher will evaluate the students informally by using observations to direct the instruction while they are on their whiteboards. The students will be assessed through an informal observation as the teacher is walking around taking notes. She can alter the difficulty of the math problems along the way based on the understanding of the students. Accommodations/Modifications: There are two students who are advanced learners so their problems will be differentiated to fit their needs and interest levels. They will be sitting at the back table working on the problems themselves. Student #1 will have more advanced problems relating to his interest, which is weather and Elvis. Student #2 will have more advanced problems involving presidents and The Magic Tree House. Once they are finished, they can go on the computer to do Lexia or Sum dog. |
